John: What did you study? Even though all of us who were so engaged into, nothing compared to what that value was, what that emotion was too. John: Your mom was part of the George Lois generation and Jerry Della Femina and then Donny Deutschs father David Deutsch. Where were you on sports? Peter Feigin: Just, just listen, just listen. I wanted to be in marketing in sales. Giannis Antetokounmpo is the gift that keeps on giving for Bucks' management. By form, I think your strength of your network is as strong and as smart as you can possibly be. Peter: We took the lumps and then, yeah, I had my dream job when I was in my mid-20s as in Madison Square Garden like running marketing for the New York Knicks and I thought I could have died and gone to heaven and thats, I lived breathed in the Knicks basketball and Ranger hockey, it was the greatest. Because I hadnt worked in, Id worked in New York city. Peter: got to do what youre going to say and say what youre going to do and really be substantial. Twin brothers Peter and David Paul are best known for their role in The Barbarians (1987). "We didn't have much time," he says. But the overarching is how do we maintain kind of championship caliber excellence, like across the business and across the team. So, I'm, as you know, extremely excitable and just want to kind of attack it and love the challenge. But while it is nice to connect, Kearns described the calls as artificial sweetener. Very little sympathy or empathy for pro athletes because of what they get paid. Peter Feigin: So, it was kind of crazy. We're talking about taking global influencers from F1 drivers to surfers, to everybody else. The most meaningful thing that you can never take for granted is we gave about 850 part-time workers rings to get done. We should put our own definitions and we should continue to improve." You really need to build equity and build trust especially in the Midwest youve. Michael Red: I'm a big believer that the healthier the person, the healthier the product, healthier the business. John: Right. Do you want to like, figure out what the handles are and become aThere are lots of opportunities in that realm, which I think are immediate. Giannis was like, Ill make this simple, its got to be bigger than that Lakers ring it might be, and its got to be cool. We wanted like a really cool clean design. We happen to have like the largest kitchen in the state of Wisconsin. If you have a partner in life, they'd better be a teammate. Peter Feigin, the president of the Milwaukee Bucks, playing defense. Peter: Yeah, I think number one is to explain kind of a small market. John: Unbelievable. Then it would move the franchise to Las Vegas or Seattle. This is probably the best hour of the week. Michael Red: So, the league, obviously, is halted with COVID and then in the middle of all of that, you have the George Floyd issue. I have an identical twin brother who happens to still be in New York and runs a private school called Trevor Day School. Hes the president of the Milwaukee Bucks and hes a native New Yorker. What would you be doing? And at the core, I've always been a sales and marketing guy. We are brand marketing sales people. It's hard to build trust here and it's provincial. He simplified the housing market for me. With your owners and partners and this great group of people you put together, whats the future look like for the Bucks and what can some of the fans expect in the upcoming season? Peter Feigin, youre making an amazing impact. Michael Red: If you had to go back to your 16-year-old self, what advice would you give your 16-year-old self? Make this the best operation, the best facilities and the best place to be, because we're going to go compete with everybody to win a championship. Back when the Feigins (now teenage) sons were much younger, Lasry suspected that Peter or Dan would give them a secret signal to scamper onto the floor if their team was losing. Peter Feigin Title: President Organization: Milwaukee Bucks Previous experience: Chief marketing and revenue officer of Deluxe Entertainment Services Group; president and chief operating. That is an interesting statement. Peter Feigin: That's an interesting statement. Their track record proves it. We were either 29th or 30th in a league of 30 teams, we were in a 25-year-old arena, that part of this was how do we get a new arena built? He captained. But talk about that nuance and being in leaders on the social injustice play. Everybody knows everybody. Peter Feigin: I'm not a good example of life balance, because I kind of blend them in such a big way that my kids, my brothers, my mother, my wife, they're all a part of it. And if a new player does not endear himself to the group, it tends to reflect poorly on whoever invited him in the first place. So, we continue to want to make this a place where players are like, "Shit, I've never been treated like this.". He simplified the commodities business like, oh, I understand it now. Within 45 minutes, we had this unbelievable excitement of, were nuts, why dont we do like take home its big ordering out. Michael Red: The mental health and wellness of the players, right? It was kind of like take a weekend and moonlight into a fun job. So, I can't be too vocal, because if the owners knew how valuable it was that, I conceptually run a retail operation with thousands of pieces of apparel. And 24 hours later, I think I called them from the Pfister Hotel and said like, "Oh, yeah. I don't know, being able to be a business person and kind of get away from your day job and go into a data room of a pro team seemed just the greatest thing I'd ever experienced. It has just been introduced for iPhones, but we are working on the Android version! We hired a great human capital person to build up the structure, but it was really best practice. The first game goes to 9 points, and every game after that goes to 7. Peter Feigin: That this was a year you couldn't even imagine. And that's kind of like you do it with great people around you. Talk about that nuance because like you were saying, from the outside in, you could say all the players have it made. And kudos to you guys for being cognizant of that. Peter: Married. It is a really tough existence. John: Right. John: I dont want to skip over that. By the way, I've got access to the Team President, the GM, everybody is all around just to resource and help. Peter Feigin: This is where I want to be. So, I think for myself to Coach Bud, to Jon, we all kind of are on the same page of preaching like, "This is a performance culture." Alex Woodhouse "I thought I'd hit the jackpot," Feigin said. We had weekly calls. John: Lets step back. Peter: heres the market. This is a super special edition. What did your dad do for a living? Its like you think about what the culture of community is. And that's what we try to do. While previous owner Herb Kohl, the five-term U.S. senator from Wisconsin, stood in high regard in Milwaukee, the franchise had begun to slip. Michael Red: I don't think there's anybody better. I mean, the fact that players had just had it is no surprise. Let them know they're part of the family. Peter Feigin: Hey, John thanks for having me. You can imagine, yes, Id rather be in Miami for 180 days, no question. Now, Ive been extremely lucky. Id like to do that ring ceremony for hourly staff every day and the world would be a good place. Is this coming? How do we build the plumbing? Peter: The ice cream truck. Its been talked about the whole Giannis effect. From 2006-2014, the Bucks only made the postseason twice in eight seasons. John: He was gone. That was my dream of dreams when I was a kid: Oh, my God. Citation. You got to think about what the objective is, but I truly do believe, just no is not an answer if you surround yourself with smart people. I think one of the big skills is, I definitely do not know the answer to everything and if youre able to Basically I do think I can solve anything. Its rotating cast includes bankers, lawyers and high-powered television executives. power forward, who lives in Southern California but joins The Run whenever he travels to New York for his job in finance. High draft picks such as Andrew Bogut, Yi Jianlian, Joe Alexander and Brandon Jennings hadn't panned out. None could have anticipated how it would grow over the years, or the motley crew of characters who would be drawn to it. We heard it straight from. Growing up, you used to hang out, go to the garden and you were a Knicks fan or Rangers fan and Yankees or Mets. But talk about that dynamic leading through that. And even as the N.B.A. And we want to attract people who want to be in that mode. And I think the only thing anybody can control is their own effort and kind of their own dreams and where they want to go. But I think, those are the things that like, yes, you can always pay people. We had Chris Middleton and Giannis involved in it kind of conceptually, and really fun conversations with Giannis brother Costas had just won for the Lakers the year before. The good news is it's pretty small shop. That was, Peter: That was it. And they all live kind of the job we all live kind of each other's lives. "Can you imagine? Everythings got to be perfect to do it and dont realize because like, hey, Ive never won a championship before, never run a ring so I just started the process and I didnt realize which I now do and why our owners wanted to be intimately involved with the design of the ring. In the face of unprecedented circumstances . We've got Peter Feigin. And also, obviously some additions with Jrue Holiday and other great players we have this year. Step one was complete. (There are perks to being commissioner.) Peter: Probably, now with the way interesting curriculum has expanded and fun case studies and like where schools are. How could we keep everybody afloat as long as we possibly could? I can't even imagine what these guys are going through.". A billionaire? And more importantly, kind of like building such a strong infrastructure with other people. And again, it's kind of the relationship. When they talk about Milwaukee, theyre like, Are you kidding me? This is the best place Ive ever been. We go from that answer where we know how important it is because the winters here suck. Peter Feigin: So I think we have that balance. This was the Milwaukee Bucks at the time had lost the most games in the NBA, had the least revenue, had the least season ticket holders, any metric you could measure. I better go home and talk to Natalia to do it. Which is a huge opportunity. What would you be doing if you just couldnt be doing this? Weve got Peter Feigin. Peter Feigin: And I think it's all how you how you go at it. More recently, Tom Kearns, a mental health counselor and one of The Runs longtime staples, has been bringing his 12-year-old daughter, Sophia, so she can shoot hoops on the side with Dan Feigins 12-year-old daughter, Dylan. He said it. That was the real mad man era that your mom was in at Grey Advertising, right? Peter: So my ring sits in my underwear drawer in our house which is like, great and its got readily accessibleI mean its huge. And I think of it, Michael, to answer the second part, it's like we thought we were woke. So, this had been a surreal year and tough as a leader because it's exhausting. It's there is no time balance, so it's kind of surreal. And the family went into the most unique times that we've ever seen in our lifetime a year ago. And I really do think like so powerful and so great, because it really accelerated the chipping away of this systematic racism, if nothing else, brought it to the forefront and the top of discussion in mind. "Scott Walker was just at the beginning of a presidential campaign. Peter: did active, to get in. While Feigin can watch Antetokounmpo and the Bucks any time he wants on NBA 2K or social media -- "The truth is our digital channels are ten times like what our local broadcasts are," he says -- he has the distinct pleasure in Milwaukee of actually getting to catch the action in person. And with that, Feigin became the business brains behind a team about to set NBA standards in architecture, basketball operations and technology -- only he didn't know it. Where is your ring? John: How about the issue of when people put on those special glasses now, and they can watch a game in 3D or whatIm so out of it a little bit, Peter, technologically speaking, but the young people are talking about the future of watching sports is were going to be able to, is going to be eventually cameras court side, and were going to be able to watch it and feel like were sitting court side and youre at a bucks game. Id worked for the New York Knicks. But online gambling, in state by state is massive and how you can center that do you want to become part of a casino? Youve got Jamie Dimon, who is this incredible long-term equity holder who is done it and then youve got Mike Fascitelli whos really was the chairman and CEO of Vornado Real Estate in New York on the commercial real estate side. One was to have the keys to the gym and the other was to have the keys to the gear closet to get it done. I'm just honored and grateful that you took the time to be on the cast today, man. Really surprised the 15 largest companies aren't following our lead and kind of like, "Where are they?" I think if you took me at this point in my life and where I am and. So, thank you for being on the cast today. The Giannis Effect has been a product of the digital age. Michael Red: The podcast, as you know, is all about betting on yourself and talk about what that means to you, Peter, like betting on yourself. Okay. So, whole different world kind of came around with COVID. You start and now talk about the major, like you said, you got a great human capital person, you got a great CFO. "You will be in a business meeting on Monday with one of the 300-500 business executives in the town and you will see them some place later that week or the week after, unlike in New York City," he says. As commissioner of one of New York Citys longstanding pickup basketball games, Dan Feigin always knew where he would be every Saturday morning: inside the subterranean gymnasium at Trevor Day School in Manhattan, where he has worked for nearly three decades as a teacher, coach and administrator. Now, the lockdown has forced some of The Runs longstanding members to confront their athletic mortality. He's Peter Feigin, president of the NBA's Milwaukee Bucks, and in the nearly five years of living in the city he has come to Gee's Clippers so that Gaulien Smith, a black man, can tame his head. We closed our restaurants down. And it's kind of as an adult got me to a place where I desperately want our youth to get exposed to things they wouldn't normally get exposed to because that's how they learn what's out there. But that kind of thing. Peter, before I let you go, I have to ask you. Peter Feigin: Not as much as you'd like to see. Now, he's the chair of the 2017 Greater Milwaukee Heart & Stroke Walk/5K Run, which is Sunday at Veterans Park . So, we stopped having basketball games and we stopped having concerts and we stopped. Michael Red: In this episode, we talk about Peter's incredible career accomplishments at major brands. Youve got Wes Edens who has probably started up dozens of companies in private equity and has an unbelievable kind of entrepreneurial spirit. Afterward, a big group heads to City Diner on Broadway for brunch. The one thing about you that I've seen over the years is that you keep the culture in a funny mood, right? John: Just for a fun look, for our listeners sake. How we build our brand and how we build our awareness and likability around that, it's just kind of one of those no-brainers, too. I said, oh, its so good to get all your support. So, that was my one get back to kind of surprise him because I think there were a few spies that were taking pictures of every time I parked in that spot for a second. I dont know if thats a word, but I would attach myself. You were very part of that whole Marquis Jet, NetJet thing too, right? Michael Red: And so, through all of the minutiae and all of 2020 and now going into the new season, which we're in now, managing to still focus the organization on winning the championship. You talk about advantages, just the osmosis at our dinner table was I knew in two seconds like I wanted to be in business. That automatically and having him sign for the next five years, that gives you this springboard that we think. Whether youre building an arena, whether youre building infrastructure or a team, whether youre dealing with the same problems, it is really powerful to end up with, when you come up with conflict and problems or you need solutions, or you need smart brains to be able to pick up the phone with 5, 10 like-minded people who are dealing with the same stuff. But the Bucks' toughest hit came off the court. And obviously, you have dealt with a little bit of this with Sterling Brown a couple years ago, so you guys happened to prepare for this a little bit. Because, I mean, you lived here for 11 years and I guarantee you, as great as everybody was, they still thought of you as a Columbus, Ohio guy. "Very simply, we went into the market and said, 'We're going to build this market. John: No question. How do you get people who care? And claimed, so before I did it again, I changed the two spots by the testing place to instead of handicap, they now say "Employee of the Month" right on the floor. Peter Feigin: Yeah, I think it's kind of where is the balance? Our owners, when you talk about, our active operating board of governors, youve got guys like Mark Lazari who kind of in avenue capital and ran the distressed debt world. I think, listen, you could certainly have success with superpower and great skill and everything, but to have peopleYou mentioned at the beginning of the show, how in a small market, do you keep consistency? Peter Feigin: And how we almost flaunt it in a good way and it's kind of easy. Weve had Giannis invest in the brewers, which is like. That sounds like a little piece, but that's a big piece in the world. Talk about having arguably the greatest player in the world on your team. It would be great if you represented me and kind of went down there and looked at the business for a second." Talk a little bit on a fun topic, when I was reading up about you and the team and everything else, I read about this new venture you guys got going over in Wisconsin called the Cluckery and I got hungry looking at the website and looking at the menu. We had a ceremony and we had, and out of all the things in the experience, like I want to be in a parade every day. I have an identical twin brother who's the headmaster of a school in New York City, that all of Wes Edens' and Marc Lasry's kids went to, who were two owners of the Bucks. You can always have a kitchen with food in it. Michael Red: Hey, everybody, this is Michael Red and welcome to the Betting on Yourself Podcast, where I interview successful entrepreneurs, athletes, and other top performers who rose to the top, took success into their own hands and bet on themselves. I think Wes Edens and Aaron Rodgers had been friends for awhile. Talk about all the nuances and the dynamics and the pressure was to lead through COVID. It was one of these terrible times where, when youre in pro sport, you book all your revenue, you do all your dirty business before tip-off and if they didnt have somebody to run the business in July, it wouldve been a disaster and they were stuck with me and thats my road to success. His own social presence is so valuable, is so great. 1 team in the league, to be the brand representation.' Peter Feigin: They made it really simple. Were going to appreciate the hell out of you. We don't have a business, not sure when we will have a business. Peter Feigin: And you've got to put with everything going on in the world, there's got to be that balance of like, "Hey, there are priorities." Everybody knows you are going to work your butt off if you work here. Just so I get a little. "We are literally just scraping the surface of what can come from this," he says. You miss falling on the ground, Dan Feigin said. They called themselves The Magic Three as middle school teammates on the Upper East Side. John: Like you said, the smartest people could take the most complex issues and just make them simple. Hes with us today. Post-acquisition were in an interesting time in life where my dad had been ill for a while and there was no way I was going to move to Milwaukee or take, even have the prospect of taking a job because I wanted to stay in New York and be with my father. We were sitting brainstorming like, how do we keep people employed? So, how do we figure out and reorganize on the senior leadership pattern. They cause matchup problems for their fathers friends. Were going to constantly improve. Michael Red: The family, I know, that's big for you in that culture and what you try to create as a culture is family. Peter Feigin: Yeah. We dont compete against each other in arena revenue and local media revenue. There's got to be ways to get there. Right? It just kind of really trying. So, we see this great opportunity to lead by example and then to almost market and promote it as this should be more the norm than not the norm in a big way. Well, a year ago, yesterday, we went to zero. Let that person speak. It's definitely not brain surgery. Let me just throw this out there. Just my own exposure was mixed in what are best practices for centralized services. And have you seen that shift a little bit in the city since Milwaukee is kind of spearheading that, the Bucks? The world is incredible. We sponsored Brook, the Lopez twins and you have Brook on your team, another great kid. I never wanted to be that guy with the goggles and the knee brace and the tucked-in shirt being like, Hey! Holy cow pinch me because this is so awesome where it is.". Antetokounmpo, now in his fifth NBA season, has become a basketball and cultural phenomenon. Feigin's first task was evident right away. Peter Feigin didn't go looking for his job as president of the Milwaukee Bucks. That school happens to be the place where all of Mark Lazari and Wes Edenss kids went, who are the owners of the Bucks. I volunteered/got myself pushed into the reset committee of the bubble committee on the NBA to do something that's never been done before. I think engagement and investment in the community and social responsibility is like a big deal. He perpetuates a culture that attracts like-minded people to him. I really think its kind of a cycle of selflessness and kind of best practices. "He plays with the Bucks 95 percent of the time. Peter: Wow. Before life as we knew it went on hiatus in March, Peter Feigin was occasionally returning to New York from Milwaukee for weekend visits and to rejoin The Run, which has become multigenerational. Peter: Yeah. Lee, 50, has worked to keep in shape by doing yoga and shooting hoops in his backyard. So, then you start thinking about really building a district in a small city within a city. What advice can you share backwards to the young people out there that want to live your journey or something close to it? "That was my dream of dreams when I was a kid: Oh, my God.. Ive got the keys to a gym.. I think its hard to grasp where this is going, but it professionalizes players at this, Peter: point teenagers at a much earlier level than theyve ever been. Now just, we've talked about your background. We're not only going to be public, we're going to privately help kind of move the cause and funding. How big a deal it is to renovate downtown, and how big we can become and what a billboard the Milwaukee Bucks should be for Wisconsin around the world. Antetokounmpo signed a four-year, $100 million extension in September 2016 (right before his first All-Star season) that will keep him under contract in Milwaukee through 2020-21.
